Inside The Next Mission

A guided journal, not a blank one.

The Next Mission is a guided journal with 12 monthly topics. Use it at your own pace and in any order — start with the month that fits where you are. Each part gives you something specific to work through, apply, track, and carry forward into civilian life.

Structure turns reflection into a process. Each month establishes a focus, an action, a checkpoint, and a defined way to move forward.

01

12 Monthly Topics

A defined focus for each topic. Work through them in any order, starting wherever you need guidance most.

02

24 Behavioral Exercises

Structured exercises move the material from reflection into deliberate action and application.

03

Accountability Checklists

Built-in checkpoints make progress visible and keep the process grounded in what was actually completed.

04

A Built-In Reward System

Reward is treated as a component of the process: a defined mechanism tied to completion and forward movement.

12 months of structure.

Not 12 months in a row. Start with any month, skip ahead, or come back to one whenever you need it.

The transition

The structure changes. The need for structure doesn’t.

Military service provides defined roles, expectations, routines, and measures of progress. Civilian life often removes that framework without replacing it with another one.

What changes

The external framework disappears.

  • Schedule
  • Chain of command
  • Shared mission
  • Built-in accountability

The schedule, chain of command, shared mission, and built-in accountability are no longer organizing the day. Decisions that were once structured become individual.

What remains

Experience still needs direction.

  • Discipline
  • Reflection
  • Action
  • Accountability

The Next Mission provides a defined process for applying discipline, reflection, action, and accountability to the work of building civilian life.

Know where you are before deciding what comes next.

The transition assessment is a short starting-point tool. It identifies where structure is already working, where it has fallen away, and where the next step needs to be more deliberate.

  1. 01Identify the areas that need structure.
  2. 02See where direction is already clear.
  3. 03Leave with a defined place to begin.

Instruction · Month 1: The Clean Slate

“The transition to civilian life lacks a clear manual.”

This opening principle establishes the reason for the journal: transition deserves guidance, not vague encouragement.

Behavioral exercise · Carry forward

Name three strengths from your service you want to carry forward, and one expectation you are ready to release.

Acknowledge the work you attempted, not only what you completed perfectly.

About the author

The instruction has a voice behind it.

Dr. Yvette Harris is the author of Journey Through Resilience: The Next Mission and the voice behind the journal. Her work is centered on providing clear, structured resources for people navigating the shift from military service into civilian life.

Define the work in front of you, create a framework for it, and move through it with consistency.

Rather than treating transition as an abstract idea, The Next Mission organizes it into practical areas of reflection, action, accountability, and continued progress. Through Journey Through Resilience, Dr. Harris brings that instructional focus into a broader platform of guided journals, assessment tools, video and audio resources, and future Foundation programming.
